Color Love Lesson #35
For Joanne Sharpe's class Color Love
"Animal Prints and Flipping Leaves"

Disclaimer: I am not an art teacher. I studied photography, other than a few online classes, I am self taught. Notice the small print. lol. Never had a blog before today either. oh my....please be patient with me! Can't spell either.

 Fun Framing

Just make some copies of your work done in Joanne's classes, cut them into various size strips and place with double sided tape. Lots of fun and quick too! More to come on Thursday in Joanna Grants Lesson #36 Recycle Your Art.

Animal Prints

Animal Prints are tons of fun and you can use them in your lettering, edging, zentangles, flowers and just anywhere! My daughter says they are "really in" so here we go...

You will need:
pencil
koi water colors (or any kind)
copic markers (or any kind)
variety of black markers (thin, med, med/lg)
oil crayons (I like portfolio, but any will do)
hot press watercolor paper  ( little tidbit here: the difference between hot press and cold press water color paper is easy to remember if you think of hot press as being ironed by a hot iron as it is smother then cold press paper)

Instructions:
1. Base coat leopard, cheetah, tiger and giraffe with your watercolors. I used the koi water colors. I like the  variety, in the base coat, that the watercolor gives you. Don't go crazy about matching the colors all animals are colored a little different just like us!
2. If you like, draw the basic shapes for all the prints with a soft hand or just skip this step.
3. Color the leopard's brown spots and cheetah's golden shapes with the copics.
4. Now is time for the black pens except for the giraffe which gets its dark brown copic.

Helpful Hints:
*Use the larger blacks for the cow and the smallest for the zebra.
*When doing the giraffe and zebra remember the copic bleed a bit so don't get to close to the next shape.

Animal Print Flowers
You will need:
The same stuff

Instructions:
1. Draw some flowers and leaves or use design below.
2, Follow the instructions above for the animal print you are using.
3. Add shading with your oil crayons.

Helpful Hints:
*Make line at the edge of the shade point and smear away from the darkest point.
*Notice that the cheetah print works from the center of the leaf out and the zebra kinda up and down (although I have done it from the center out on some of the leaves).
*Don't get to crazy about the patterns as long as the are kind of close it will read animal print.

Print The Template

For mac users: Single click the picture you want. Press command, shift and the number 4 at the same time. A little cross hatch will appear, place that in the center of what you would like to copy.  Now press the space bar and a little camera will appear (so cute).  Click on the mouse and you will hear a shutter like a camera. Your photo will be on your desk top, double click it. Take your cursor and crop. Go up to tools and use the crop selection. Then file and print, pretty cool huh? (sorry pc users I don't know the short cuts. If anyone knows them please post. Thanks)

Simple animal flowers but I see some flipped leaves...time for flipping leaves

Flipping Leaves
You will need:
The same stuff
(don't u just love that?)

Instructions:
1. Draw your leaf in pencil then subtract a section and flip it.
2. Add shading, this is what makes it believable, very important
Hints:
* Always flip on an angle or a curve.
* Remember the size of the flip, don't exaggerate it.
* It is natural and should feel like a flow, no strong angles.
* Shading with the oil crayon, make a line at the edge of the shade line and smear it away from the darkest point. You can also shade with the medium you are working with but the oil crayons are the easiest.
*Don't forget to add shading down the center line of the leaf.

Sample practice page in progress. I only used watercolor with this sample. There is plenty of room for your imagination on this practice page. Add your own flowers and more flipping leaves. Have a good time with your flips and add any other cool stuff!

Hope you had fun and I can't wait to see some animal prints and flipping leaves!!!!
